How do you test a material for asbestos?

Testing for asbestos requires a small piece of the material be sent to a laboratory for viewing under a microscope. The piece does not need to be very big, usually about the size of a dime, and most of the time the sampling location can be hidden behind a light cover or in the back of a closet. Air sampling allows us to determine if asbestos fibres are in the air and calculate the concentrations! To find this out, we pull air through a filter using an air monitoring pump. Then we use a phase contrast microscope to count the number of fibres embedded in the air sampling filter. With this method we can let you know if your home or work space is safe for occupancy! Indoor air quality testing is an important first step in assessing the problem.
